India tops all other Asian nations for immigrant scientists and engineers in the US, accounting for 950,000 out of the continent’s total of 2.96 million, said a new report.
The figure is for the year 2013, showing an 85% increase from 2003, as per report from National Science Foundation’s National Centre for Science and Engineering Statistics.
In the year 2013, latest year for which numbers are available, 63% of the US immigrant scientist and engineers were naturalized citizens, while 22% were permanent residents, and 15% were temporary visa holders were temporary visa, holders,.
In 2013, in the US, immigrant scientists and engineers comprising of 57% were born in Asia, 20% were in North America (which excludes the US) Central America, the Caribbean or South America, said the report.
In the year 2013, 32% of the immigrant scientist has reported their degree was mastered as compared to 29% of US-born counterparts and 9 % have reported it was a doctorate compared to 4% of US-born counterparts.
Nearing to 80% of the immigrant scientists as well as engineers were employed in 2013, the same percentage as their US has born counterparts. Among the immigrants in Science and engineering workforce, the largest share of 18% worked in Computer and Mathematical Sciences, while a second largest share of 8% worked in Engineering.
The three occupations of life scientist, computer and mathematical scientist and social and related scientist have seen substantial immigrant employment growth from the year 2003 to 2013. The data presented in the NCSES report from 2013 SESTAT, an integrated data system does provide a comprehensive picture of the individuals who are educated and employed in science as well as engineering fields.
