Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister, Chris Alexander, revealed that 150,000 new citizens have admitted to Canada in 2014 and more than 1,300,000 new Canadians have entered the country till date, since 2006.
The country has privileged from highest immigration levels over the years. Chris Alexander admitted that they are planning to lure at least 240,000 permanent residents to the country in 2014. He added that majority of the permanent residents in Canada wish to apply for Canadian citizenship, which is a significant aspect to review. According to 2011 figures, around 86% of permanent residents became citizens of Canada.
Economic immigrants have formed a largest group of immigrants admitted to the country over each year. Skilled Worker, Skilled Trades, Live-In Caregiver programs, and Canadian Experience Class are the most commonly chosen programs by migrants. Family class immigrants made up the second largest group of immigrants under family reunification policy. Spouses, parents and grandparents, dependent children of Canadian citizens or permanent residents fall under family class. On a whole, these two categories of immigrants represented around 88% of permanent residents who were welcomed in 2013. Refugees and applicants accepted under compassionate and humanitarian basis formed the remaining part of the permanent residents.
Over the past years, CIC has initiated several reforms that have improved the entire immigration system, including economic and family class immigrants. Some reforms include setting up caps for application and language requirements for economic migrants and lessening the dependent children’s age to restrict the sponsorship of children to country. Alexander expects more changes in the coming future as the Canadian government is constantly working to streamline the immigration system to support its economy.
