High Demand For Indian Doctors In UK

30 Jan 2015

Immigration News

Here’s some good news for Indian doctors who would like to work in the UK. At present, the UK is facing acute scarcity of skilled doctors and to address the shortages the country is in huge demand of doctors especially from India.

Despite the fact that UK visa reforms have dropped the count of Indian doctors arriving to work in the UK, the National Health Service (NHS) in the country is still in need of them.

According to the official statistics, during the past five years, it was observed that Indian doctors’ working in the National Health Service has dropped to almost one third.

However, a huge number of 3,000 overseas doctors recruited previous year came from India and others are from Poland, Australia, Iraq, Pakistan, Greece, Sudan and Syria.

The medical director of University hospitals Birmingham, Dr David Rosser, said that the NHS (National Health Service) doesn't have enough doctors as per its needs. The scarcity is genuinely very high and sufficient doctors are not getting trained properly in the country. So, the UK hospitals are dependent on foreign trained doctors.

The NHS had moved toward India during labor scarcities in 1960s and early 2000s to augment the number of doctors in the country.

Formerly, a permit-free system and some of the temporary two-year training visas, enabled Indian doctors to effectively complete their general practice or specialist training in the UK providing they were able to secure a place depending on merit. Following the reforms in visa system, this sort of training is only offered for EU nationals, therefore Indian doctors are not able to apply and in response to which their number has dropped.

Thus, some new measures that will be needed are under consideration for Indian doctors, which are described as the support for NHS in the past, to carry on the support services in future as well.

NHS operates with Health Education England (HEE) to alleviate present shortages. It is increasing the count of trainee nurses, and with the Emergency Medicine College, has organized the influx of 50 overseas A&E doctors.

A spokesman said that the overseas health employees make a precious contribution to the National Health Service; however, language checks are introduced to make sure they can properly converse with their patients.
