New Express Entry Would Help In Reduction Of Time By 50%

09 Oct 2015

Immigration News

The provincial govt has announced on Wednesday; a new initiative has been aiming to attract more skilled immigrants to Newfoundland and Labrador.

Premier Paul Davis has made the announcement at the Association for the new Canadians centre in St john.

The Express entry skilled worker category would allow a faster process to take place so skilled immigrants can come to the province.

As per the new category, 550 applications would be accepted annually, in addition to the 500 annual nominations under the provincial nominee program.

Davis has said increasing the number of immigrants have come to the province is an important part of the growing the economy.

We require to grow our population to grow our province, growing workforce does help to drive our economy, he said. It does create opportunities for businesses, they hire more people, and they need earn income as well as revenue and must spend that.  It will help in driving the economy, and also it will help in overall population growth.

As per the govt statement, the agreement has a commitment from the federal govt process the application in six months or less, which helps in reducing the wait time by about half.

Davis added that the province had negotiated with the federal govt for a highest percentage increase for numerous fast tracked immigrants that NL would accept.

While there is a downturn in the oil markets, the Davis has said that there are still jobs that are not being filed by the local workforce.

Presently we have a better ability to identify those skills up front and look for people who wish to meet those skills sets versus first entry, first come first serve basis.

Growing retention rate

Employers should demonstrate that they have tried to hire someone locally. They should advertise for minimum six weeks, but they must prove that they were unable to fill the position.

Davis said while the priority is to ensure Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans gain employment getting and keeping the immigrants is a much-needed part of the population growth strategy.

He added that the province’s retention numbers had been increasing which does mean that fewer and few immigrants are using Newfoundland and Labrador as a gateway to move other parts of Canada.

Davis said we desire people to come here; we know our retention numbers have improved. Since about 2006, 2007 there has been steady increase in our retention numbers.
