Australia Set To Issue Five Million Visas In 2015

Australia is set to grant over five million visas this year for the first time. The decision was taken after witnessing more number of travelers, students and workers flocking the country on short-term visas, anticipating 1.9 million overseas nationals are likely to enter the country at any time throughout the year.

Reportedly, the number of permanent overseas nationals is also increasing, with this year’s count is expected to exceed the current record of 185,000. Moreover, the number of Chinese-born Australians had a three-folded to around 450,000 within two decades. And, the number of Indians has increased by four times (400,000).

Sources stated that the largest group of people were born overseas than at any time since the gold rushes of the 19th century. It represents a migrant-to-population share of around 28 percent. It has to be mentioned here that the composition of that population is transforming the way that the proponents of White Australia could never imagined.        

The Secretary of the Department of Immigration of Australia, Michael Pezzullo, noted a deep shift towards skilled overseas nationals, which was targeted to address the economic needs of the country.

He added that if Australia’s immigration program is well outlined, foreigners will take advantage of the high level of economic participation and welfare dependency. Immigration reaps significant benefits, including the demand for goods and services increase national income, quality living standards, enhanced labor participation and economy’s productive capacity.
