Canadian government has announced analysis and improvements for Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), which include restructuring of the program and significant changes to procedures of different work permit applications.
The changes were summarized at the joint press conference held by Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development, and Chris Alexander, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.
The TFWP is being re-structured to include two distinct programs, TFWP and the new International Mobility Programs (IMP). Through TFWP, temporary workers under different streams will now come to Canada. These streams require approval of the government for jobs offered by the employers of Canada and the approval comes in form of Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). TFWP will be managed by Employment and Skills Development Canada.
Specific foreign work streams free from the requirement of LMIA are now included in International Mobility Programs which will be led by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC).
The new LMIA is extremely thorough and careful when compared to previous LMO process, which classified the workers depending on their occupations. However, the new LMIA will classify the workers based on the wages they will earn in Canada.
Employers appointing workers in some of the occupations will be qualified to have their LMIA application processed in merely ten days. They are classified as Highest-Demand Occupations, Highest-Paid Occupations and Shortest-Duration Occupations.
Employers, who wish to hire an employee under one of the streams of International Mobility Programs, should possess a job offer and other appropriate information approved by CIC.
