Canada has launched a major immigration overhaul aimed at selecting newcomers who are a better fit for its society and economy.
Emphasizing on factors such as an applicant's job skills and fluency in English or French, this August, Canada started accepting its 1st immigrants under part of an overhaul.
The major objective of Canada is fixing the growing economic chasm between locals and many of the immigrants who are selected by Canada's old applicant-screening system.
Canada accepts more immigrants than any of the Group of Seven most advanced economies. The country that has officially embraced multiculturalism for decades, mostly won accolades for how it selects newcomers, particularly through a points-based system that tries to evaluate an applicant's ability to thrive economically.
The August newcomers were the first under the measures that Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government set up in May aimed at attracting immigrants with particular trade skills. At the center of the wide-ranging series of changes, the government has enacted is the revamped points system.
Canada's new points system places larger emphasis on an immigrant's fluency in the country's two official languages. It weighs how closely applicants' qualifications match Canadian credentials and whether they have employment arranged in Canada. In the case of the August arrivals, it also weighed if they have specific skills in demand, like plumbing. The system also gauges the adaptability, factors like time spent previously in Canada.
