Changes To SINP's 'International Skilled Worker' Category

19 Nov 2013

Immigration News

Recently the Government of Saskatchewan has announced changes to the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP). The program now has merged the previously 9 immigration categories to 3. These 3 new immigration categories will see a number of significant changes.

Here’s a brief summary of these changes to the ‘International Skilled Worker’ Category.

International Skilled Worker Category

This category is for workers who wish to stay and work in the Canadian Province of Saskatchewan. If the applicants can successfully demonstrate that they have the necessary education, experience, adaptability and language to thrive in the province then they can be nominated by the SINP for immigration.

The program will include the following criteria:

  • Applicants need to have language skills equal to or higher than CLB (Canadian Level Benchmark) 4. The language skills must be proven by submitting scores from a language exam that is approved by SINP;
  • A points system that assesses education, employment offers, work experience, family connections, language skills and other factors. The points for Family connection have been increased, and they now account for around 20% of total points;
  • Applicants who do not have a skilled job offer need to submit a settlement plan and proof of settlement funds; and
  • Applicants with work experience in a regulated profession (such as engineering or nursing) need to obtain necessary provincial certification.

For the year 2014, a total of 250 applicants without a job offer in Saskatchewan will be accepted. The occupations of the applicants should be included on a designated list of occupations. This list and more detailed guidelines on the application procedures and points system will be made available in December 2013.
