Australia announced that the changes made to the English language test for 457 visa program will be favorable and maintains the integrity of the program.
Foreigners who are applying for a 457 visa need to demonstrate they meet specific English language levels and the announced changes would make the exam more flexible. The announced amendments require applicants to take the average score of five out of four components instead of qualifying each test.
The Assistant Immigration Minister of Australia, Minister Michaelia Cash stated that the changes would benefit overseas applicants by providing greater convenience to them.
Proponents opined that the amended English language testing requirement would offer more flexibility whilst meeting required standards.
TOEFL iBT test creator, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) stated that the reforms would fuel the integrity of the 457 visa program and will help to lure the best and talented skilled overseas nationals. It will in turn provide Australian business with greater access to a pool of highly skilled professionals who can contribute their skills for the betterment of the economy.
The Associate Director of the ETS Australasia, Helen Cook, briefed that the decision was made to achieve the successful transition to the multiple-provider approach in student migration. Further, she added that the decision will accomplish government’s aim to permit permanent skilled overseas nationals to prove their English-language proficiency with the TOEFL iBT test.
ETS also stand by the government’s decision to consider the average score recommendation as a more convenient approach to meet the English language requirements.
