Germany requires more number of skilled workers to fill 117,000 occupations in engineering, science and technology sectors, and the figure will be escalated to one million by 2020, revealed by The New York Times referring to Cologne Institute for Economic Research.
Because of its low-birth rate, the country needs more workers particularly to fill jobs that require high levels of education and training.
Germany is the largest economy in Europe, which has drawn a total of 400,000 immigrants previous year. The country is trying to be on a par with the United States, Britain and other countries to draw qualified individuals from overseas who can address the needs of major industries.
In order to represent Germany as a land of migration, the country has relaxed norms identifying foreign qualifications, granting residence permits for foreign skilled workers since 2005.
Moreover, the country is facing shortage of qualified candidates to fill the available apprentice jobs over the past six years.
