The regional office of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has revealed that Germany turned up to be the most admirable study destination abroad for Indian students. There has been a rise of 114% as regards to the enrollment of Indian students for higher studies since 2008.
A total of 7,532 students were enrolled during the period of 2012-13 while only 3,516 were observed in the 2008-09 academic year. Australia, UK, US, and Canada have emerged as the most preferred destinations for Indian students because there is no language impediment. However, Germany, which holds fifth highest place in terms of Indian student population on campuses, aimed at overcoming this by initiating courses in English and relaxing visa rules enabling students to search for jobs as soon as they complete their studies.
Almost half of the Indian students have enrolled in engineering courses, which accounted for 48% followed by mathematics and natural sciences representing19.8%. While Information technology made up 13.8%, and law, economics and social sciences constituted 9.4%.
The Director of the DAAD Information Centre in Chennai, Franziska Lindhout, said that attempts were being brought about to internationalize German institutions. Learning German is not anymore a prerequisite for students who wish to study there, he added. As part of the internationalization process, Indian students are welcomed to choose a language to aid them adapt better and for jobs, she added.
Germany encourages Indian students by sponsoring new schemes to allow them to study, carry out research and obtain work experience in the country. Working, internships concerned with research and scholarships forms a part of the effort. In addition, reforming visa norms aimed at enabling Indian students to search for a job for more time has helped to attract a number of Indian students to the country. Indian students form the second largest group of the student population in Germany, after china.
