Over the next 6 years, Ontario is investing $190 million to help create jobs in Ontario, draw and retain top scientists, increase investment and develop cutting-edge technologies.
The investment will be split between the Research Infrastructure ($125 million) and Research Excellence ($65 million) programs of ORF (Ontario Research Fund). Since 2003, the ORF projects have helped create over 5,500 jobs in Ontario and influenced more than $2.9 billion in funding.
Ontario is home to around 50% of all research in Canada. Over 150 new companies have been founded and 20,000 researchers have been trained in Ontario over the last decade. This recent investment in the research community of Ontario will help keep the province at the forefront of scientific discovery. It will also help ensure economic growth, prosperity and agility through new services and technologies that can be marketed to the world.
Encouraging research is a part of the economic plan of Ontario Government to invest in infrastructure, invest in people and support an innovative and dynamic business climate.
Ranking 6th in the world, the impact of Canada's research is right behind the U.S. and U.K, and ahead of other top-producing scientific countries like China, Australia, Japan and Germany.
Since 2003, the Research Excellence projects of ORF have provided more than 23,000 opportunities for researchers to improve their skills and knowledge, and have created 64 spin-off companies employing 571 people.
Since 2003, the Research Infrastructure projects of ORF have trained or hired more than 20,000 people, helped create over 5,000 jobs and created 86 spin-off companies.
