You may apply to come to New Zealand to live if you are sponsored by a family member who is already a New Zealand citizen and/or resident.

You must be in one of the following groups:

• Partner – you are the husband, wife, defacto or civil union partner of a New Zealand citizen or resident.
• Dependent Child – you are a dependent child with a parent who is a New Zealand citizen or resident.
• Parent – you have a child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident.
• Parent Retirement Category – you have a child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident and you are able to invest NZ$1 million in New Zealand for four years.
• Sibling or adult child – you are the brother, sister or adult child of a New Zealand citizen or resident.

If you are a New Zealand citizen or resident you may be able to support your partner's application or sponsor your dependent child, parent, adult child, brother or sister.

Partner

If you are a partner of a New Zealand resident and wish to move to New Zealand to join your partner, you will need to apply for residence in New Zealand. Your partner must be a New Zealand citizen or resident, and support your application.

If you wish to support your partner's application you must be a New Zealand citizen or resident, and be eligible to support your partner's application. To support your partner's residence application you must:

• provide evidence of your immigration status
• meet character requirements, and
• if you are aged 17 or over, attach police certificate(s) from any country (except for New Zealand) in which you have lived 12 months or more in the 7 years before the application is made

Dependent Child

If you are a child and wish to move to New Zealand to live with your parent(s), you will need to apply for residence in New Zealand. Your parent must be a New Zealand citizen or resident and be living in New Zealand.

If you wish to bring your child to New Zealand you must be a New Zealand citizen or resident, living in New Zealand, and be eligible.

As a parent you must

• be lawfully and permanently in New Zealand
• supply evidence of your residence status

Parents

If you are a parent and wish to move to New Zealand to be close to your child or children, you will need to apply for residence in New Zealand. Your child must be a New Zealand citizen or resident, and be eligible to sponsor you.

 Note: your sponsor must have been a New Zealand or Australian citizen and/or the holder of a residence class visa (or a residence permit/returning resident’s visa) for at least three years immediately before the date your completed application is received by Immigration New Zealand.

Sponsoring your parents

If you wish to sponsor your parent(s), you must be a New Zealand citizen or resident, and must be eligible to sponsor your parent(s)

As a sponsoring child you must complete a Sponsorship Form for Residence in New Zealand on which you:

• declare you meet the requirements,
• attach evidence of your immigration status
• attach evidence that you and/or your partner meet the minimum income requirement

Parent retirement category

Requirements to migrate under a parent retirement category are:

• Adult child:

You must have an adult child who lives in New Zealand and is either a New Zealand citizen or resident.

• Centre of gravity:

The centre of gravity of your family must be in New Zealand.

• Investment and settlement funds and/or assets:

You must nominate funds and/or assets equivalent to at least NZ$1 million for investment funds, NZ$0.5 million for settlement funds, and be able to show an annual income of NZ$60,000 at the time of application. You will need to provide evidence showing that your investment and settlement funds and/or assets are owned by you or jointly by you and your partner and/or dependent children.

You will need to provide verifiable documents to show that the funds you transfer to New Zealand came from the funds and/or assets that you nominate. You will need to place your investment funds in an acceptable investment(s) in New Zealand.
