Fellowships
Fellowships are grants given to students who are pursuing graduate, post graduate and research studies. Students receive these grants from universities, institutions, private organizations and in some cases from the government.
Assistantship
PhD students can take up Assistantship offered by the university. Students with Teaching Assistantship have to teach in classes and Research Assistantships deal with research related work.
Example:
PhD students working as Graduate Teaching Assistants [GTA] in the university attain formal designation, and counted as employees of the university. They have to accept all terms stated in the agreement, to have the benefit of all the privileges awarded by the university. They will receive money according to the terms and conditions mentioned in the agreement. Some GTA’s will get complete tuition fee covered and also will get a combined salary. Few GTA’s will receive maintenance grant of up to the full UK Research Council rate of £13,590 (2011-12 rate).
Scholarships
Student with excellent academics will receive scholarships from the university or a private source. Scholarships can also be awarded to students with financial constraints, and university officials have the final authority over this decision. Scholarship could be different to each student depending upon their performance.
