In the early years, when China Sovereignty received Hong Kong’s submission, the ethnic minorities of the country were under the threat of ‘statelessness’. Around 7,000 ethnic minority families were denied of the citizenship, which were non- Chinese residents. Such families were given British citizenship. Over the years families knit with Indian sub-continent were having settling troubles with the settlement in Hong Kong. There were many issues afflicting one of the major ones were unequal access to education.

They were sent to segregated public schools which were poorly equipped. They were thrown in the vicious cycle of poverty for many years. Taking that in account British government decided to give them British citizenship with ‘burgundy passport’ under the power which derived from the association with EU. This was an effort for the fairer public education system that could help the children of ethnic minority attain full potential.

Now that Britain has voted to leave EU, the British Citizenship holders are under the dilemma what this would mean to them. They are wondering whether Brexit will hinder in their freedom of mobility. The only certainty currently is uncertainty. The situation of the migrants in the UK is so intimidating that it the hate crimes have increased to 57% in past few days.

But even in such a cloud of chaos and dilemma there is still hope for safety of people known as the ‘others’ in the country. Only a month before Brexit UK witnessed that Sadiq Khan was voted as London’s new Mayor! He won it against a billionaire Zac Goldsmith who was criticized for his appeal to anti- Muslim prejudice. This event shows tolerance, progress and diversity. This can be a lesson for all the haters in Britain and Hong Kong.

Agree or not, a country’s prosper occurs with the acceptance of nationalities across the world with different talents, which can be used for the betterment of any country. Safety of an immigrant should not lie in the hands of amateur prejudices.
