There are two primary categories in the field of construction – civil engineering and architecture.

Civil Engineering

Civil engineers, who are professionals plan, design and supervise constructions of pipelines for oil, gas and water, dams, bridges, sewage systems, roads, airports and other buildings. The technicians and draftspersons assist them and take care of the maintenance.

As of November 2013, there were 47,800 jobs for professional civil engineers and around 12,800 for draftspersons and technicians in Australia’s construction industry. This steadily growing industry is expecting somewhere between 10,000 to 25,000 openings in both the fields individually, by November 2018. The average range of civil engineers is 25-34 years of age.

A draftsperson or technician requires only a diploma or an advanced diploma in civil engineering to land a job in Australia.

Architecture

Architects are designers who create plans for private and public buildings for commercial, industrial, institutional, residential and recreational purposes. Aesthetics is their forte.

Architects in Australia – (ANZSCO: 2321)

Around 19,600 people were employed in 2013 as architects in Australia. This number will keep growing in the long run, and the speculation for 2018 is 10,000 to 25,000 job openings. The average range for this profession is 35 years to 44 years. A bachelor’s degree in architecture will suffice if you want to apply in Australia.
