44,600 Jobs In Regional Australia Help To Attract More Skilled Workers

18 Jul 2019

Jobs in Australia

A seven-step toolkit created by the Regional Australia Institute (R.A.I.) has been rolled out in regional and rural Australia to bring more skilled workers to the area.

The town of Rupanyup is approximately 300 kilometers north-west of Melbourne. It has a population of 500; agriculture supports the industry in this area, which is quickly changing due to advancements in technology. But David Matthews, Adelaide and Bendigo Bank director, and a third-generation farmer in the town told it has been challenging to bring skilled workers.

There are still opportunities in the transport industry so you can obtain jobs in the industries and the road transport industry, he said. But, he told, now there was a higher need for individuals who know how to produce high yielding crops.

Mr. Matthews has actively sponsored a small migrant workers group principally from Colombia to work on his farm. He told there are now ten migrants residing in the town, and others from South America aspiring to migrate to fill job openings - but it's not sufficient.

Regional Australia Institute’s Seven-step Toolkit

The Regional Australia Institute (R.A.I.), states there are presently more than 44,600 job openings in regional Australia that are showing hard to fill. Chronic labor deficits have influenced some regional areas, resulting in population drop and the closing of businesses.

This month noticed the R.A.I launch of the latest toolkit to try and support communities to bring more migrants to settle in regional and rural Australia.

The toolkit comprises sections on how to greet and host migrants, as well as to ensure job and housing, and taking into account customs, culture, and environment.

Decline in Migration to Australia Regional Areas

Government statistics reveal within 2017-18, of the higher than 111,000 skilled migrants who landed in Australia, just above 6,000 were part of the Scheme Regional Sponsored Migration, a 39% reduction from the 2016-17 period.

Central Queensland University study in 2018, observed factors that keeping migrants from moving to the Australia regions were proposed limited services, social segregation and a lack of possibilities to connect with individuals of a similar background was part of the issue.
