Canada Immigration: Postpones 2020 Parents And Grandparents Program

Canada is postponing the opening of its 2020 Parents and Grandparents Immigration Program due to its ongoing attempts to control the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

IRCC Announces Details about PGP Postponement

The initiation of the call for expressions of interest (EOI) to apply for the successful program was expected in the following weeks, as per the Refugee, Immigration and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) media statement.

The temporary postponement of the call for applications is not assumed to influence when grandparents and parents will arrive in Canada, and Refugee, Immigration and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will still process these specific applications.

The Parents and Grandparents Immigration Program permits citizens of Canada and permanent residents of Canada to sponsor their grandparents and parents to obtain Canada PR status. The Canadian Immigration program is so successful that the federal government of Canada has sought multiple ways over the past decade to maintain its intake since 2011.

Last year, remarkable 100,000 Canadians expressed or showed their interest in sponsoring a grandparent or parent even though there were only 21,000 Canadian PR places available.

Similarly, Canada Immigration is aiming towards the admissions of 21,000 newcomers under the Parents and Grandparents Immigration Program each year by its 2020-2022 Plan of Immigration Levels.

Refugee, Immigration and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has tried various approaches to control the PNP in the current years and proceeds to recognize ways to improve its approach. These have involved using a first-come and first-served model, whereby it processed many applications in the order that they were provided. It has also proposed a lottery model, in which sponsors were selected randomly.

It continues to be seen what the Parents and Grandparents Immigration Program intake process will look like once I.R.C.C starts it later in 2020.
