Immigrants to Canada who were about to formally become citizens of Canada and whose ceremonies have been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic may shortly be able to take the citizenship oath virtually.
In a statement given to the media, the Canadian federal government announced that it will start to execute virtual ceremonies of citizenship as soon as possible.
The initial online ceremonies will be available to those who “have an urgent requirement for Canadian citizenship” also to those who had earlier been registered to take the oath in individual and whose events were canceled due to special measures that were executed to stop the COVID-19 spread.
Refugees, Immigration, and Citizenship Canada (I.R.C.C) temporarily canceled all ceremonies of citizenship and analyses higher than two months ago as a component of a myriad of specific measures proposed in reply to the global pandemic. At that time, the federal government of Canada stated that these events must be rescheduled “shortly” and did not give a date for their reoccurrence. It also said that those influenced by the cancellations would be awarded a new date and time in the following weeks.
This declaration by I.R.C.C is yet another positive move for proposed immigrants, also to those who are already in Canada and whose lives have been in exclusion since mid-March.
I.R.C.C announced in the report the virtual citizenship occasions would be created to “preserve the integrity of the judicial process and indicate the significance of the occasion” and would soon be scheduled. No additional details have been given to the public yet and also no timetable has been fixed.
An application fee of CAD 530 and a Citizenship Right Fee of CAD 100 are also needed as a part of the process of application. However, the Liberal Party which is presently in power has pledged to ensure that permanent residents of Canada can apply for citizenship of Canada without a fee.
The commitment by the Liberal government to suspend fees for citizenship is one of the many recent policy shifts that could increase naturalization rates even considerably over the coming years. Citizenship attainment is high in Canada remarkable 85% of newcomers become Canadian citizens.
