Canadian policies for bringing global talent have earned a glowing review in the latest white paper from the G.M.A.C (Graduate Management Admissions Council).
Creative policies comprising the Global Skills Strategy are placing Canada ‘to yield economic advantages in the years to come’, the report states.
Canada’s progress in attracting global students and holding them after their graduation is also praised in the report, global expertise flows in 5 nations:
The white paper, named ‘Early Warning Signals: Losers and Winners in the Global Race for skilled professionals highlights how the demographic difficulties meeting Canada mean the only approach it can get the talent it requires in its economy is by immigration.
It shows out that while immigrants make up 20% of the Canadian population, they hold 50 percent of all degrees in STEM subjects – Technology, Science, Engineering & Mathematics.
Central to Canadian capacity to compete in bringing S.T.E.M skilled professionals is the Global Skills Strategy, which involves the Global Talent Stream, started in June 2016.
This launched a two-week processing of work permit for Canada’s most in-demand professions, plus short-term work permit exceptions.
It has given a reliable stream of international talent to firms, decreasing the processing time from one year to less than 10 working days.
Alongside the victory of the Global Talent Stream, the G.M.A.C report also highlights Canada’s improvement in attracting foreign students.
Canada has witnessed an 8.6% increase in international business school appeals in 2019, the report writes, following on from a 16.4% increase in 2018.
The report describes this as a positive sign for the country’s future and trends of mobility ahead.
A 2018 Canadian Bureau for Global Education survey unveils 60% of foreign students who come to Canada intend to become Canadian permanent residents.
