Cities over Canada are involved in a heated competition to bring a high number of immigrants. Due to their aging populations and fewer birth rates, cities require more newcomers to keep their economies stable.
At the nationwide, Canada welcomed higher than 341,000 newcomers in 2019 or approximately 0.9% of its population. Canada is welcoming more newcomers by Federal Express Entry, the Provincial Nominee Program (P.N.P), also their newer initiatives such as Atlantic Immigration Pilot (A.I.P).
Toronto remains to welcome the most newcomers among other cities of Canada by a very broad margin. It attracted approximately 118,000 newcomers last year or 35% of Canada’s immigrant total. Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, and Edmonton rounded out the best five cities in Canada.
Based on per-capita, however, the story is different. Utilizing this metric, Charlottetown headed the way as it welcomed 2.4% of its population. It is due to Prince Edward Island’s success in bringing a huge number of economic class newcomers by the P.N.P and A.I.P.
Regina was 2nd place, with a share of immigrants also close to 2.4% of its population. Toronto’s extensive intake landed it in 3rd place on a national per capita, as it welcomed 1.8% of its population.
Many cities in the Atlantic region of Canada have been able to welcome greater numbers of newcomers in the latest years to help in promoting their economic growth. Fredericton, Moncton, and Halifax each welcomed at least 1.2% of their populations. Both the P.N.P and A.I.P have been effective in encouraging immigration to the region.
Welcoming 1% of a jurisdiction’s population, whether at the provincial, national, or municipal level is a significant milestone in Canada. Welcoming at this level is a vital means of encouraging economic growth. The two ways to improve an economy they are by welcoming more individuals and using those individuals more productively in the labor market.
Immigrants share in Canadian population growth is increasing, and immigration is assumed to contain 100% of the Canadian population increase within the following decade or so.
Luckily, cities in Canada have excellent tools at their disposal to improve their immigrant populations. There are above 80 economic class streams accessible by Express Entry, other federal programs such as the P.N.Ps and AIP. These streams grant more cities over Canada with the possibility to achieve a significant 1% immigrant milestone.
