The latest ‘Migration Policy Institute (MPI)' report suggests that permanent residents applying for US citizenship have increased remarkably in the past few months. This significant change in the current scenario is the outcome of the Obama government’s endeavor to encourage more permanent residents to become U.S. citizens and play their role in the upcoming US 2016 presidential election by casting their votes.
The report states that the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) have received 440,000 applications for Citizenship between October 2015 and March 2016. The figures show an hike of 21 percent of applications over the period between October 2014 and March 2015.
The report also states that “This increase can partly be attributed to the citizenship awareness campaign launched by the White House Task Force on New Americans, as well as a desire to vote in the 2016 national elections.”
During the fiscal year (2014-2015, 653,416 immigrants became permanent residents. Out of this approximately 38 percent represented from just six countries that include, Mexico - 95889, India - 37854, The Philippine - 34591, China – 30284, Cuba - 24092 and The Dominican Republic - 23775.
