Nearing to 87% of the H-1B visas for computer jobs are offered to Indians as per the analysis of (USCIS) data. In the year 2014, about 76000 H-1B visas were issued to people working in computer-related occupations. Neighboring nation, China has accounted 2nd largest share (5.1%), and Canada received about 0.8% of such visas.
The remainder has come from a number of other nations in comparatively smaller percentages.
Most of these visas are issued to employees at companies such as Infosys, an Indian based IT service provider. In the year 2013, the Company Apple inc’s, which has headquarters in Cupertino, California had hired 509 workers and about 427 people at Aetna inc.’s Hartford, Connecticut offices. In both the cases, the majority of workers hired were Asian.
The IT services providers apparently cannot get enough Indian programmers, which has little to do with a shortage of competent natives for these of jobs, but a lot to do with the industry’s business model.
Georgetown University’s Institute for the study of international migration told the publication.
The distribution of H-1B visas does vary more significantly in other occupations. In examining the H-1B visas were issued for engineering jobs, nearing to 46.5 % of the recipients were Indian, 19.3 % were Chinese, and 3.4% were Canadian. The remaining 30.08% of visas issued went to citizens belonging to other nations.
As per the USCIS
The H-1B visa has annual numerical limit or cap to issue only 65000 visas each fiscal year. The first 20,000 petitions filed on behalf of beneficiaries having US Master’s degree or higher are exempt from the cap. Additionally, the H-1B workers who are petitioned for or employed at an institution of higher education, a nonprofit research organization or govt research organization are not subject to this numerical cap.
The US govt’s fiscal year do start on 1st Oct. H-1 B petitions can be filed up to six months before the start date, which is generally April 1 for an October 1 start date.
