Whilst uncertainty continues to surround many immigration issues in the US, American Universities are offering legal advice to students from overseas. Universities such as Yale and Harvard have offered reassurance to scholars coming from countries including India and China.
Since the Trump administration came into office, new visa policies threaten the American dreams of many foreign students. Universities are offering legal support to students who are concerned about the effects and any changes may have on their studies.
Tamar Szabo Gendler, a representative for Yale University said that 25 institutions in the US had joined forces, appealing against the immigration curb and arguing that it is against US Law. Speaking from Mumbai, Gendler went on to say that the new rulings could have serious issues in the overall intellectual landscape in America.
On January 27th, Trump announced restricted entry into the US for seven countries, now reduced to six. The changes have made many students who are studying in the US under H-1B visa rules extremely nervous and so universities have stepped in to offer legal advice to their students. They are also actively encouraging students from aboard to continue to seek education in the US.
