UK Immigration: New Points-based Visa System May Benefit Indians

UK Home Secretary on 19 February 2020 announced the initiation of the new points-based immigration system, directed at bringing the brightest and the best talent from the globe, including India, and slashing down the number of low-skilled workers landing in the country.

The new immigration system will come into force from 1 January 2021 after completion of the transition period. The UK's formal exit from the European Union (EU) in the last month, which will end free migration of individuals within the economic bloc.

The present post-Brexit system, which will appeal equally to the EU and non-EU nations like India, is based on allowing points for special skills, salaries, qualifications, and occupations, with visas only granted to those who earn enough points.

The government of UK said the points limit for the new system will be carefully placed to bring the talent based on the UK requirements. Skilled workers will require to meet various relevant criteria, including special skills and the capability to speak English, and can work in the UK.

All candidates will be needed to have an offer of a job and, in line with the recommendations from Migration Advisory Committee’s (MAC), the minimum salary cut-off will be fixed at 25,600 pounds which is lower than the earlier 30,000 pounds level for the UK Tier 2 work visas.

Those attending to reside and work in the UK will require to be eligible up to A-level or similar, rather than degree-level below the present system. This will grant higher flexibility and assure that the UK companies have access to an extensive pool of skilled workers, the UK Home Office stated.
