As 360 permanent settlers from India arrive in Australia each week, immigration from India is continuing to surge. Almost 19,000 Indian-born individuals arrived in August 2013. According to the new ABS data, the number has increased by a third compared with the same period last year.
However, an analysis of the Overseas Arrivals and Departures, Australia report reveals that the number of UK-born migrants fell from 15,790 to 11,450 over the past year, and the number of China-born settlers increased slightly to 18,240.
New Zealanders were the only immigrants more than Indians with 26,170 NZ-born settlers, moving to Australia this year. Other significant settler groups included Sri Lankans (3580), Vietnamese (3630), Malaysians (3810) and Filipinos (7270).
These figures do not include people on temporary visas, such as skilled workers and students on the 457 program. A separate Immigration Department report said that the net overseas migration for Australia increased from 208,000 to 237,000 this year.
