Australia Needs Mining Construction Workers, Trade Occupations

The government and Cape Australia are negotiating a visa agreement which, if passed, will bring 2,062 foreign labours to Western Australia.

Labour specialist, Cape Australia has requested for the visa agreement and this visa, if passed would eclipse Australia's richest person Gina Rinehart's deal. This deal would allow over 2,000 workers to move to Australia visa and work as scaffolders, sheet-metal workers, painters and cryogenic laggers on some of the largest mining and construction projects in the country.

The ongoing Australian mining boom requires foreign workers to ensure the development and progress of the country’s economy. Mining and construction have acted as life-saver for Australia in the time of recession and have given hope to the country’s flourishing economy.

Enterprise Migration Agreements or EMAs are always criticized by labour unions. They argue that EMAs prefer cheap foreign workers to domestic labours.  But the latest finding highlight that the Western Australian mining and construction industries require foreign labours as the domestic labour from Eastern part are not ready for relocation.

Spokesperson for the Immigration Minister of Australia, Chris Bowen said that “"Just because a company has made an application for a labour agreement, does not mean it will be successful. Our first priority is and always will be jobs for Australians".

The first EMA was granted to Ms Rinehart in May for the Roy Hill project. This project has brought 1700 workers from across the world.
