UK’s Immigration Minister announced a set of new rules to the Immigration rules of the country last month and Teachers of English as a foreign language are happy with the changes. Mark Harper released a statement on September 6, 2013, outlining a number of changes to the Immigration rules. Among these was a new provision that permits to people in the country on UK Visitor Visas to take short study courses.
As of October 1, 2013, visitors to the country on general visitor visas, business or visiting family were allowed to take-up short-term English language courses lasting not more than 30 days.
The Pie, an educational magazine, received news from English language teachers and schools that this will result in a noticeable increase in business as, till now, they had to turn away individuals with visitor visas who are interested in joining courses.
The Pie reports that according to English tutors, they had to reject 10-70% of people applying to join courses due to their immigration status.
Industry body of English in UK says that, for English tutors, the change can be quite significant.
Universities and business schools that offer short-term courses to business clients also benefit from the changes.
