Federal Government Says Quebec Planned Immigration Levels Are Not Enough

The Quebec province has newly tabled a document to the National Assembly of Quebec planning to boost the number of accepted immigrants to the Quebec province. This plan follows earlier resolutions from the Quebec government to dramatically limit Quebec province immigration.

The new provincial government election in 2018 October in Quebec has caused ambiguity surrounding province immigration. The political party chosen worked on a proposal to decrease the immigration levels drastically to Quebec, which gained much attention in Canadian media. Different from any other Canadian province, Quebec has specific responsibility for their immigration program, which enables them to choose immigrants on their own terms.

Modifications to the Immigration System of Quebec

In 2019 January, the Quebec immigration minister declared that the province would be terminating the portal utilized to process online appeals for the famous Quebec Skilled Worker program. Days later, the immigration ministry stated the province’s intention to end the backlog of above 18,000 unprocessed appeals, which would affect a maximum of 45,000 people. These modifications got heavy criticism from appellants, lawyers of immigration, and the Federal government of Canada earlier this year.

Presently, Quebec's Skilled Worker program portal remains open but has not noticed a selection from many months. Quebec's immigration goals released in 2018 December described the province's plans to allow 40,000 new immigrants in the current year 2019, dropping from 52,000 allowed newcomers in the year 2017. This decision was widely criticized by the Federal government of Canada, who has been supporting immigration targets to grow with every coming year till 2021.

Quebec Rises Targets for 2020-2022

Recently, the Quebec province has tabled the latest plan outlining levels of immigration for 2020-2022. Opposite to expectation, the proposed quotas improve each year, attaining 50,000 by 2022.

While this progress is excellent news for those curious in Quebec immigration, Canadian Immigration Minister, Ahmen Hussen thinks the goals have room to improve. He also states that considering the 120,000 unfilled jobs in the Quebec province, it should remain to welcome even higher immigrants in the future.
