There has been an announcement that, international research students studying at universities in Canberra, Australia would no longer require to pay state school fees for their children .
Presently, there are many expats in Australia who face school fees upto $12,000 per child for state provided education with decisions taken on basis of state by state. We find research students are older, and most of them have children and their earning ar
e low.
ACT chief Minister Andrew Barr said that fees will be waived for overseas students with children who are presently undertaking research at Canberra University, Australian National University and UNSW Canberra.
He added, that it is part of a wider policy to attract more international students to the state and he is aware that the cost of school for students with children can make the difference between moving to Australia or not.
Barr desires to boost Canberra as a higher education destination globally and they are aware that other states such as New South Wales, for waiver of fees for the children belonging to International research students in public schools.
He pointed that Canberra’s education sector is one of the city’s biggest employers with one out of every nine people either study or are employed by the university institution.
This measure would help in creating new jobs and also it helps in boosting economic activity in the sector. School fess have acted as disincentive for this particular group to choose Canberra as the place to study and further their research careers

He also said that, eventhough the number of higher degree by research student studying in Canberra is comparatively small, they are important group due to its research expertise as well as specialization they bring to the territory and the benefits that flow from this.
The Australian govt desires to attract more international students to study at Australian universities and has produced a strategy to increase numbers between now and 2025 and more than double numbers within a decade.
The Australian National University vice Chancellor Ian Young said, the announcement has been welcomed by Universities in Canberra. It would help us to attract and retain some of the world’s best young researchers who will as well as study in Canberra and contribute to Australia’s research excellence.
Michael Frater, the NSW Vice Chancellor has pointed out that, there is significant completion while recruiting internationally. He also added, this particular initiative is critical step in promoting the ACT as a competitive destination,
