The online pro-immigration pressure group - FWD.us, founded by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, and other titans of the IT industry held a 'Day of Action'. The main intention behind this was to put pressure on the members of the House of Representatives to support immigration reform legislation.
FWD.us was established by Zuckerberg along with others including Microsoft founder Bill Gates, LikedIn’s co-founder Reid Hoffman, and Dropbox founder Drew Houston. The group supports US immigration system reform so that IT firms can hire more talented workers from around the world.
According to the group, the US immigration system is so restrictive and slow that talented workers are unable to get visas, which, they say, is damaging the US economy.
Pro-immigration 'Twitter storm'
On 10th September 2013, FWD.us inspired its supporters to email their Congressional Representative, asking them to back reform. FWD.us also urged supporters to tweet at their Representatives in Congress and asking them to retweet the message. The group aimed to create a 'Twitter storm' in favor of reform.
In June, The Senate - the upper House of Congress - passed The Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act 2013. If it became law, this bill would introduce many of the changes that FWD.us wishes to see. However, for the act to come into existence, it must also be passed by The House of Representatives - the lower house.
