To help students lead happier and more satisfying lives, a new holistic approach to teaching is rising in Hong Kong. This approach focuses on the well-being of students to best serve the needs of a culturally diverse student body with varying levels of motivation and abilities.
According to studies, many students becoming less connected to school and lack social-emotional competencies as they move from elementary to middle to high school and that lack of connection can adversely affect their health, behavior and academic performance.
Acknowledging the need to teach students in a more holistic way, with a stronger focus on well-being are a growing number of students and CIS (Chinese International School) is one of them.
This academic year, ‘positive education’ has been formally incorporated into the CIS community, with initiatives comprising its entire staff. Headmaster of CIS, Dr Theodore Faunce said that they see positive education as a whole school initiative and the curiosity and demand of the staff to get on board created the climate for moving ahead with this initiative.
The staff of CIS are being trained in the practices and principles of positive education and understanding how to teach students about ‘meta-thinking’: self-awareness, self-identity, and ways in which they can understand their own emotional landscape in a better way.
