As an outcome of the recent changes to the student visa and the closure of the post study work visa program, there has been a great drop in the number of Indian students applying for the British Universities for the next academic year.
With post study work visa students are allowed to work in UK for 2 years after completing their course. This type of visa was more popular between the self sponsoring Indian students who wished to recover the cost of their study by working after completion of their studies.
According to the David Cameron Government’s efforts to reduce the immigration, the Home Office has declared that the post study work visa will be closed on April 2012. Recent changes to the student visa regime are also driven by efforts to prevent its abuse.
According to Times Higher Education [THE], an authoritative publication focused on the higher education sector, British universities have been “hit by a downturn from Indian Students.”
Modification in the student visa had tremendously affected overseas students. Due to which there has been a reduction to 20% - 30% applicants from the Indian Subcontinent.
Greenwich University and Middlesex University are the two institutions known for recruiting heavily from this region and now they are experiencing a dip in demand from India.
THE publication also stated, “The fail is thought to be due to negative media coverage of UK visa policies, but is also being influenced by the closure of the existing post study work route in April 2012.”
