Introdution Of New Australian Temporary Visa Streams In Four Months

The legislation, which is regarded as a replacement of the 457 visa, through which, people will be allowed to work in Australia, for four years, and which serves as a path to obtaining permanent residence, is only four months away.

The Temporary Skills Shortage visa, to be introduced in 2018, will have two categories. The new visa program will have a short-term visa for two years and a medium-term visa for four years.

The candidates who work on a two-year visa can apply for a second visa when there is a continuing offer of service.  The candidates having a four-year visa have the option, to submit a PR application, on the completion of three years employment, provided they are offered support from their visa sponsors.

Before this change happens, the Federation of Ethnic Communities Council of Australia, that represents people of diverse linguistic and cultural background, has appealed to the Government, to protect the workers, arriving in Australia, under the new rules, from abuse. Mary Patetsos, the chairperson of the council said, overseas workers are important for the economy in Australia. The new categories of Temporary Work Visas must provide proper protection to all migrant workers. The safeguard of the welfare of migrants has encouraged the community, to recognise the role, played by the migrant workers to developing the society and economy of Australia she added.

A spokesperson of the Immigration Department remarked that it is expected that the number of people, who will apply for the new TSS visa, will rise and fall, based on the response to economic necessities. FECCA welcomed the changes to the new citizenship rules, which was earlier withdrawn from a vote, in the Senate, as some of the proposed amendments were described as discriminatory, unnecessary and cruel.

The move to extend the period of waiting, and the demanding of university standards in English language skills, from migrants, so that they can become citizens of Australia was not only unjust but also unfair. Generations of migrants, who only had limited knowledge of English while becoming citizens, had made a great contribution to Australia. For a long period, Australian citizenship had promoted the concept of inclusivity, which allowed the migrants to feel like an Australian, in spite of the country of their origin,’ she added.

This legislation would have harmed the multicultural society of Australia by creating a class of Australian residents who did not have an access to citizenship.
