Marking the Student Visa Day on 28th May, 2014, the US consulate general plans to interview more than 1, 000 F1 visa applicants at the Mumbai consulate.
Melina Gomes of Mumbai US consulate, said that the students will be served with refreshments in a celebratory atmosphere. There will be staff available from the United States-India Educational Foundation and the consulate to answer any questions. Experts will provide the students the necessary tips and information on the education and the life at the campus for their success in United States.
Huge numbers of overseas students in US who are studying in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields are from Asia with 24% of them from India and China.
According to US immigration and customs enforcement report, India holds the second position after China as regards the enrollment of the foreign students in the universities and the colleges of US. 11% of the students who come to US on F-1 and M-1 visas are from India, while 29% of them are from China.
Peter Haa, US consul general in Mumbai, said that around 100,000 Indians are pursuing higher studies in US and thereby establishing relationships with the country that will be everlasting.
The consulates in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai as well as the US embassy in New Delhi have issued more than 36,000 F1 student visas by the fiscal year that has ended on 30th September, 2013. Since last October, the visa issuances have risen by 40% when compared to the same time duration in the previous year.
