Pentagon officials have approved a policy to permit a limited number of young people, who migrated to US as children without appropriate documents, to get enrolled in the military. This provides them a pathway to eventually attain citizenship of the nation, according to Huffington Post.
The latest change under Pentagon recruitment plan named as Military Accessions Vital to National Interest (MAVNI) will authorize few undocumented immigrants possessing medical and language skills to get enrolled in the military. Since 2009, under MAVNI around 3,000 legal immigrants have enrolled and at present the program would also be available for undocumented individuals.
Obama administration has not officially announced this proposal. If this measure comes into effect it is expected to grant approximately 550,000 undocumented young people to remain in the country through Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Immigrants in the country can legally get enrolled in the military, and can gain expedited naturalization as citizens of US through their service. Since September 2002, over 89,000 service members have attained citizenship, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. However, the undocumented young individuals have not been allowed to enroll in military, though they have been authorized to work and remain in the country under DACA.
