Dubai has bounced back from the throes of recession in which the Emirate was bailed out by Abu Dhabi to build not only more world high rises but also build a city anew on the outskirts of the present one.
Dubai has now drawn up new mega projects comparable to the tallest building in the world Burj Khalifa (829.8 m). Within the shadows of the Burj is coming up a shopping mall, Dubai Mall, that is poised to have the biggest shopping area in the world comprising designer shops. After the shopping, any adventurous shopper could even go to scuba-diving in a shark tank that is also sprouting up.
The new city is going to be named after the ruler, Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum. It includes the largest mall that has capacity for 80 million shoppers a year, no less. Not just the shark tank, a Hollywood-style entertainment centre is also part of the new Dubai city.
Catering specially to Indian shoppers will be a Bollywood-style park offering live theater shows. They can, along with their counterparts from other parts of the world, go on a romantic trip to a replica of the Tajmahal in Agra, that will be four times the original and fully marble!
Dubai that has witnessed a non-stop construction boom amidst ruins of recession all round has warded off its debt crisis with a pound 6 billion bailout by Abu Dhabi.
With the new city planned, the market has been agog with news of Dubai's recovery. Proving the point is 82 per cent occupancy in hotels in Dubai and an increase in tourist arrivals by 10 per cent.
