After the policy caused outrage in the UK and abroad, the British Government has scrapped the plan to force people from Pakistan, India, and some African countries to deposit cash in return for a 6-month visa.
The plan involved visitors from Nigeria, Ghana, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India, being forced to pay a £3,000 deposit to receive a visa, with the intention to serve as a deterrent for overstaying. The money was to be refunded when the individual left the country before the expiry of the visa.
Sunday, a government spokesman said that the pilot scheme, which was about to start the coming month, has been canceled.
A spokesman said without elaborating that they have decided against proceeding.
The government of UK chose the specific countries as they are viewed them as being ‘high risk’ with regards to illegal immigration. The scheme paved way to talks of retaliatory measures and wide-spread anger from the public.
A few weeks ago, another controversial immigration policy was abandoned after a few members of the public and politicians called it racist.
The pilot scheme of country-wide advertising vans with slogans ‘Go home or face arrest’ was stopped in October.
