UN Chief Seeks And Calls For Safe, Secure And Orderly Migration

According to news reports dated May 14^th, 2014, Wednesday, the UNO (United Nations Organization’s) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, has urged nations all over the globe to unite for the collective goal of bringing about orderly, secure, established, etc. means of migration and to effectively utilize the benefits of this process and occurrence in favour of the people traversing the borders and for the society as a whole.

He stated that ‘migration’ should be a passage of hope for those who travel distances, not a dangerous, risky game in which those who are migrating and their families are in danger as for as their lives and means of living/survival are concerned. He stated that to ensure this, some proven methods must be found and adopted.

He added that one in thirty persons in the world is a migrant, and that there are many advantages when migration is properly managed and many negative effects, when it is mismanaged.

He therefore called upon all countries to unite in the cause and process of managing migration properly through embracing systematic methods which are ‘regular, safe and orderly channels’.

Only last year, Mr. Ban had emphasized the importance of basing all the migration policies on ‘fundamental rights’. This meant that a migrant worker is not discriminated against, his/her rights are assured, and that none of the migrant men, women and children suffer from abuse.

He pointed out incidents in the recent past where prospective migrants and refugees have suffered loss of their lives, even as some others ended/end up in detention camps.         

Mr. Ban stated that with ‘compassion, common sense and political will’, international migration can be better managed and in a ‘coherent, comprehensive and balanced manner’. He added that there was a need to ‘better integrate migration and development in national and international policies’.
