Canada's citizenship and immigration minister, Chris Alexander announced that the nation has welcomed 150,000th new citizen of 2014 .This is twice the number compared to the equivalent period in 2013. Government’s action to reduce backlogs and enhance the time of processing has resulted in the increase of this number.
Alexander has welcomed the new citizens of the nation at a citizenship ceremony held at Scarborough, during which he emphasized on the recent changes of the government to the system of citizenship. These changes have improved the processing times and reduced the citizenship backlogs by eight percent.
Latest changes to the ‘Citizenship Act’ will let the competence of the citizenship program to go through additional improvements. Besides, the new efficient streamlined decision making process and some other changes to the Citizenship Act will bring down the processing time for applications of citizenship down to under one year, decrease the application backlog of citizenship by over 80 percent and attain a working record of applications in the financial year 2015-2016.
The minister said that the government is proud to welcome new citizens to Canadian family. Also, the government would see huge number of new Canadians taking up the rights and responsibilities of citizenship with the recent changes to ‘Citizenship Act’, the minister added.
