With an objective to improvise the conditions at the detention centers at Canada, Ralph Goodale, Canada’s Public Safety Minister announced an aid of $138 Million.
All the detention centers across the country will be upgraded as per the decision. Detention centers at Quebec, Laval and Vancouver are also on the list.
Goodale quoted that, “In my first few months as minister responsible for Canada Border Services Agency, I have certainly heard the concerns about immigration detention, and I've studied those concerns with great care.”
Earlier this year CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) had reported that under the ‘Immigration and Refugee Protection act’, approximately 450-500 people are detained in the various detention centers across the nation. .
As per to ‘End Immigration Network’ approximately 15 people have died since 2000 under CBSA supervision.
During the year 2014, an investigation was carried out by Red Cross Society, which pointed towards various shortfalls at the detention centers. The centers were overcrowded and had poor physical and mental health care facilities.
