Switzerland can be a costly place to ski. However, writing it off as a playground exclusively for the rich would not be correct. The Swiss Alps may very well be the most beautiful in Europe and thanks to the incredibly efficient rail system which is now efficiently linked to the ski train of Eurostar, it is also the convenient of all the Alpine countries to get around.
Now, Swiss tourism bosses have come up with a range of winter deals from two-for-one packages to discounted ski passes due to the recession. So with hoards of resorts, running from A for Andermatt to Z for Zermatt, here’s a place that might be in your budget.
Verbier
Switzerland’s very own answer to Trois Vallées of France, for the youngsters nothing can beat Verbier. You’ll find an astounding 410km of blue, black and red runs in the surrounding 4 Vallées area, with plenty of fresh snow-filled area to explore with a guide. Verbier has the best après-ski in the country, with regular guest DJs and snug little bars. Here, the events present everything from snowboard film festivals to ski dating. Make sure to visit in March for the annual ‘Freeride world tour’. For a budget lunch, try La Vache (The Cow), a mountain restaurant by celebrity trio Lawrence Dallaglio, Carl Fogerty and James Blunt. Staying in Verbier itself will ease your budget to a large extent (try Verbinet for last-minute chalet deals). Part of the same ski area and more affordable is Nendaz, in the next valley north.
