At a citizenship ceremony held at Scarborough on 30 May, 2014, Canada’s Minister for Citizenship and Immigration, Chris Alexander, announced that Canada accepted 100,000th new citizen of 2014 in the previous week. The number of people who became the citizens of the country until this date in 2014 is over twice in comparison to the number of new citizens during the equivalent period last year.
100,000 new citizens have come to Canada from over 200 countries and were sworn in as citizens at 1,080 citizenship ceremonies held all over the country.
The proposed changes of the Canadian government to Bill C-24 named as Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act, will lessen the wait times by employing faster or simpler working methods for more efficient and effective decision making process for citizenship. By this means, the average processing time is expected to come down to below 1 year and above 80 percent of the present backlog applications will be reduced by 2015-2016.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) received 333,860 applications of citizenship in 2013, the highest number ever. In 2013, Canada accepted 128,996 new citizens from 219 nations, which shows an average of 10,750 people every month. Until now, in 2014 over 20,000 individuals are being sworn in as citizens every month.
Chris Alexander said that government is executing significant enhancements to the citizenship program and the high number of people sworn in as Canadian citizens shows that the changes being implemented by the government are working.
