Changes To Temporary Work, Sponsorship, And Student Visas

Canadian immigration made a few changes to immigration guidelines to avoid visa fraud issues and make it easy for immigrants to integrate into the society.

Work Permits

Implementation of Accelerated Labour Market Opinion - Canadian employer has to get a Labour Market Opinion (LMO). LMO is issued by the government of Canada stating that the hiring of the foreign professional will have a positive (or neutral) effect on the local labour market.

Bridging Work Permit - This new visa scheme applies to individuals who have submitted a visa application for Canadian PR and are already staying and working in Canada on a temporary work permit.

Student Visas

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has proposed to have cap on the issuance of study permits for students who will be attending a Canadian institution that has been designated by its province or territory.

A new Study Permit has been also proposed by CIC to allow students to work off-campus on a part-time basis. At present, international students need to have a separate temporary work permit to work outside their school.

Family Sponsorship

To curb fraud and support legitimate visa applicants, two new regulations have been introduced by CIC.

1. Individuals who became Canadian PR through spousal sponsorship program have to maintain their Permanent Residency for 5 years before they can in turn sponsor a spouse.

2. For couples who have been staying together for 2 years or less and do not have children together, the sponsored individual will receive provisional PR for two years. The couple has to prove that they have stayed together in a legitimate relationship in Canada.
