A new program aimed at retention of foreign students in Nova Scotia will be expanded in three more Atlantic provinces. The entire region plans to overcome the retention problem of immigrants collectively.
Study and Stay’ provides a broad range of services for selecting a group of foreign students and takes measures for helping them to integrate into Nova Scotia society fully.
It aims to look into the retention problem where 60 percent of immigrants who arrive in Atlantic Canada prefer to stay in the region. The rate is 90 percent in Alberta and Ontario.
It will complement the active Atlantic Immigration Pilot, which manages the International Student Stream and offers PR to graduates who obtain a Job Offer from a recognized employer.
It has received a slow start now, but the AIP is projected to attract 4,000 more immigrants annually in the region in the next two years, as per the recent Federal Government Levels Plan. The AIP has a settlement plan and also an endorsement requirement specially designed in helping immigrants to integrate into the society of their choice. It exclusively deals with retaining people in the region. Atlantic Canada did not have a problem to attract immigrants with skills but had a problem in retaining them. It is designed to greatly improve the rate of retention and also addresses the challenge which is acute in Atlantic Canada compared to other parts of the country.
Presently this program of Nova Scotia is specifically targeting foreign students from India, China, and the Philippines, and provides support to them through employment activities, events, and workshops, and holds career workshops and opportunities for the term of their courses, for developing a successful career.
