With an intention to address the rising the labor needs, Alberta—Canadian province, urged the federal government to lift the cap on the number of permanent residence nominations for economic immigrants.
Alberta minister of jobs, Ric McIver, said that the province has already sent a letter to Chris Alexander, minister for Canada Citizenship and Immigration.
In an interview, McIver said that in order to bring the required skilled people to the province, he requests the federal government to take the cap off on the utmost number of provincial nominees.
The province may need 96,000 employees short by 2023 and most of them are for skilled and high paid jobs, he added.
He also said that the total number of economic immigrants permitted to Alberta must be determined by the evidence of labor market and local facts so that Alberta can better respond to its own conditions.
Under 2014 immigrant nominee program, for the Alberta's quota 5,500 certificates have been granted, which were not sufficient, he added.
The certificates enable semi skilled and skilled immigrant employees together with their partner and dependent children, to get nominated by Alberta for Canada permanent residence.
The final decision to approve permanent resident applications will be made by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada. However, some of the firms are at menace of losing these workers due to the reforms made by Ottawa for temporary program
Elevating the cap on the number of provincial nominations helps the province’s economy across the board, counting the industries of beef, tourism and energy.
Recently, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) called Ottawa to replace temporary foreign worker program with a Canada visa that would offer a path to permanent residence for overseas entry-level workers. The organization added such a visa would address labor scarcities for small businesses.
