The largest American employer is Walmart, with a workforce of roughly 2.2 million people. However, due to of its international reach, only 1.3 million of those were employed in the United States.
Every one of America's 10 largest employers has a workforce of more than 300,000 people. Some of the companies, like McDonald's and Walmart, offer mostly low-wage jobs. Others, like GE (General Electric) and IBM, are leading technological innovators and their workforces are better compensated and more highly skilled. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 10 American companies that, combined, employ more than 5.6 million workers.
Based on a screening of S&P 500 companies, 24/7 Wall St. determine the 10 largest employers based on the total number of part-time and full-time workers at the end of each company's most-recent fiscal year. The year-over-year changes in stock price are as of August 20, 2013.
