Atlantic Immigration Pilot Continuing Its Positive Impact On Canada

13 Feb 2020

Atlantic Immigration Pilot

Atlantic Canada’s unbelievable immigration run remained in 2019 as the region welcomed with open arms approximately 18,000 immigrants.

The Atlantic region, which comprises Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick, has been producing notable efforts in the latest years to welcome a high number of immigrants.

Atlantic Canada has a more aging population, less birth rate, greater rates of out-migration, and weaker rates of interprovincial migration than different parts of the nation. As a result, organizations, governments, universities, and immigrant-serving organizations in the region have been working to improve policies to welcome and hold more immigrants, foreign students, and temporary immigrant workers.

In the year 2010, Atlantic Canada welcomed 8,000 newcomers. This considered for about 3% of all immigrants to Canada, even though the region contains about 6.5% of the Canadian population.

In other words, Canadian Atlantic immigrant intake was disproportionately lesser than the immigrant intakes of other provinces.

A 26% Increase in 2019

In 2019, the number of newcomers in Atlantic Canada rose by another 26%. All 4 provinces in the Atlantic region broke their own records of immigration.

Newfoundland and Labrador province witnessed a 21% increase in its immigrant population, welcoming approximately 1,900 newcomers, up from 1,500 in the prior year.

Prince Edward Island province witnessed a 15% increase as its intake moved up to approximately 2,500 related to 2,100 in 2018.

Nova Scotia province experienced a 27% gain to about 7,600 newcomers related to 6,000 in 2018.

New Brunswick province had the biggest increase as its intake increased to 6,000 related to about 4,600 newcomers in the previous year.

Atlantic Canada Could Attain a Significant Milestone in 2021

Atlantic Canada is on the best track and is meeting in on a significant milestone. It requires to welcome approximately 24,000 immigrants to reach its proportionate share of newcomers to Canada. Hoping it continues to improve the number of immigrants by 20% or more per year, as it has recently done, it could attain this milestone in 2021.

Improvements to the region’s PNP allotments in recent years have been effective in the success of immigration to the Canadian Atlantic region, as has the A.I.P. The present federal government has said in a mandate letter from Marco Mendicino, Immigration Minister that it will make the A.I.P as a permanent program.
