A newly built permanent migration scheme exclusively for highly-skilled techies and it will target 7 “future-focused areas”, including Cyber security, financial technology, and quantum computing, in a request to manage Australian competitiveness.
The Global Talent Independent (G.T.I.P) Program which was initially started in June 2019 to bring the best talent from around the globe was started by Minister for Citizenship, Immigration, Multicultural Affairs, and Migrant Services, David Coleman on Nov 4.
The program intends to attract up to 5000 high-income earners who are working at the top of their discipline to Australia within July 2019 and June 2020 with the proposal of a fast-tracked process for Australia PR.
It sits independently to the ‘global talent employer-sponsored (GTES) program’, which was declared permanent in August following a 12-month pilot.
Only migrants who are working in one of 7 “future-focused areas”, who are likely to receive higher than $149,000 per year in Australia, are eligible for Australia PR under GTIP.
The areas are Agri Tech, fin-tech, MedTech, space and advanced manufacturing, Cyber security, energy, and mining technology, and quantum information/data science/advanced digital and ICT.
Standard character, security and integrity tests were undertaken for any migration will also appeal for this program.
However, rather than waiting for migrants to appeal, GTIP aims to actively seek out expertise using ‘Global Talent Officers’ from the Home Affairs Department.
These officers which have previously been deployed in Washington DC, Singapore, Berlin, Santiago, Shanghai, Dubai & New Delhi, and will work across nations in their regions and they will guide aspirants through the process of application.
The Financial Review of Australia has stated that Coleman informed this fast-tracked method would take only a few weeks, not months.
Coleman also said the GTIP was intentionally targeting the Global highly-skilled tech migrants to keep Australia in the best position for competitiveness.
Minister for Science & Technology, Industry, Karen Andrews told local job creation, in extension to the 5000 G.T.I.P placements, would encourage the growth in the Australian tech industry.
