Australia Likely To Introduce Provisional Visas Before Offering Permanent Residency

As per the visa transformation discussion paper released on Monday by 'Immigration department', the candidates opting for permanent residency are required to spend a certain amount of time on “Mandatory Provisional Visas”.

The discussion paper examines certain questions like, Should a foreign immigrant who is willing to settle in Australia, before becoming eligible for permanent resident visas, spend a certain amount of time in Australia? What are the different aspects that should be looked upon?

As per the reports in November last year, the federal government was to discuss the move and a protected and sensitive note was analysed by the “National Security Committee”. The same was brought into notice before the cabinet this year.

Over the last two decades, the number of candidates applying for the permanent residency in Australia has increased substantially. In 2015-16, approximately half of the permanent residency that was offered to people in Australia, were already staying on a temporary visa. As per the discussion paper released on Monday, the Temporary Residency is gradually becoming the first step for permanently residing in Australia.

It has been argued that the government should facilitate the permanent residency to the brightest and the most eligible international students and highly skilled employees on the national interest.

In some of the categories of Permanent Visa, migrants need not have to spend time or stay in Australia, before they receive the permanent residency for which the discussion paper says is conflicting with countries such as the US, the UK, and the Netherland that has a more formal evaluation process and a period for analyzing those who seek to stay permanently.
